Voice: Why Range Is Credibility

By Paul Gordon

Soft, loud, high, low — and the pause between. A voice stuck on one setting reads as either a drone or a pitch. Neither gets believed.

Range is not theatrics. Range is credibility. It tells the listener you're responding to your own meaning in real time, rather than reciting something you decided on hours ago.

Tune the instrument before you play it

You're not performing vocal tricks. You're widening the band you're allowed to move within — so when the meaning calls for soft, you have soft, and when it calls for the floor to drop, you have that too. The point is availability: the choices are there when the moment needs them.

Take it further

Listen back to a recent video for one thing only: how much your voice actually moves. One setting, or real range?
